The queue

Three ovens, and still at the back of the line

Searches for banitsa and sourdough near users in Lozenets, Mladost and Lyulin showed chain supermarkets first. The bakery had one unverified Business Profile covering three shops, and the reviews were split between them.

The bread was never the problem: the sourdough sold out by noon and the banitsa queue reached the door. But on the map, a search from a flat in Mladost found the nearest supermarket bakery counter first, then two more. With one pin for three shops, Google had no way to show Zlatna Kora to people walking past the Lyulin and Mladost counters, and every review written there made the Lozenets profile look busier without helping the shop that earned it.

What the audit found

  • 01

    Profile

One unverified profile for three shops

The pin sat on Lozenets. Mladost and Lyulin had no profile at all, so the map could not show them to anyone nearby.

  • 02

    Reviews

    38 reviews, split three ways

22 of the 38 described the Lyulin counter but counted for Lozenets. The newest review was 11 months old.

  • 03

    Citations

    13 of 23 listings disagreed

Old landline, two spellings of the name (Zlatna Kora / Златна Кора), and four listings with all three shops on one street.

  • 04

    Content

    No page said “banitsa”

The site was one English page with the menu as a scanned PDF. Nothing in Bulgarian, nothing per district.

  • 05

    Technical

No Bakery schema, 4.8 s mobile LCP

No LocalBusiness markup, hours missing from the HTML, and a 3.1 MB hero photo of a loaf.

  • 06

    Competition

Chains took the pack on proximity

Three supermarket chains with verified profiles in every district held 41 of the 51 top-3 slots across the 17 districts.

The recipe

Four tactics, one per oven door

Built on our Local plan: make each shop its own place on the map, make every listing agree, and give each district a reason to pick the bakery over the chain.

  1. 01

    Google Business Profile

Three verified profiles, one per oven, each a complete shopfront on the map.

    • · Video verification per shop
    • · Bakery primary category, two secondaries
    • · 61 priced menu items, weekly 7am posts
  2. 02

    Local citations

One spelling, one phone number per shop, in every place the map checks.

    • · 23 listings cleaned, 9 phone numbers fixed
    • · Latin and Cyrillic names reconciled
    • · District news and market listings added
  3. 03

    Review strategy

Reviews that land on the right shop and name the right bake.

    • · Per-shop QR cards in paper bags
    • · No incentives, one ask per pre-order
    • · Owner replies in Bulgarian within 48 h
  4. 04

    Neighbourhood pages

    Google Business Profile

    One profile becomes three

Verified the Lozenets profile by video, then opened separate profiles for Mladost and Lyulin with their own addresses, hours and phone lines. Primary category moved from “Store” to “Bakery”, with “Pastry shop” and “Breakfast restaurant” as secondaries.

No district won yet. Chains still hold every pack.
