The challenge

A good lease offer, and a search result that told landowners to say no.

Landowners researching lease offers found mostly scepticism online and little about the developer itself.

Bluestem Grid develops grid-scale battery sites on leased farmland across 40 rural counties west of Kansas City. Every project starts at a kitchen table: a land agent leaves an offer, and the family searches the company name that evening.

What they found was a protest group, a forum thread and hearing minutes. The company had answers on safety, taxes and decommissioning — none of them were where a landowner would look.

Diagnosis · authority audit

Six findings from the field survey.

  1. LinksNo. 01

22 referring domains, 15 of them directories

The backlink profile was trade-show listings and energy directories. Not one link came from a source a farmer in Coffey or Lyon county would read.

  2. Branded SERPNo. 02

Page one for the brand name was 6/10 opposition

A county Facebook group, two forum threads and a zoning-meeting PDF outranked the company's own About page for “Bluestem Grid lease”.

  3. ContentNo. 03

No page answered a landowner's first question

Lease terms, decommissioning bonds, fire safety and property-tax impact lived in a 38-page investor PDF that Google had never indexed.

  4. LocalNo. 04

Zero local-news citations in 40 target counties

Weekly papers and county radio covered every hearing, but reporters had no data, no spokesperson page and no reason to link to the developer.

  5. TechnicalNo. 05

Project pages blocked behind a staging noindex

Eleven county project pages shipped with a leftover noindex tag and orphaned URLs, so the few good answers that existed could not rank.

  6. EntityNo. 06

Three spellings of the company across the web

“Bluestem Grid”, “BlueStem Energy” and an old LLC name split mentions, so Google never consolidated the brand as one entity.

The strategy

Be the most useful source in every county before the hearing.

Built on our Authority plan for digital pr & links: four tactics, each feeding the next — data gives reporters a story, guides give their readers somewhere to land, and every local link lights another county on the grid.

1

Digital PR

Gave regional editors a reason to call the developer before the opposition.

  • A spokesperson and press-kit page with plain-English project facts
  • Story pitches timed to county commission agendas, not national news
  • Agricultural trade press angles: drought-proof lease income
2

Data studies

Published the County Lease Ledger — modelled lease and tax figures for every county.

  • Per-county estimate of school-district tax revenue from storage sites
  • Lease-rate ranges per acre benchmarked against wind and solar
  • Open CSV and embeddable charts so local papers could cite it
3

Landowner guides

Turned the investor PDF into answers a landowner can find in one search.

  • Nine guides: lease terms, decommissioning, fire safety, noise, taxes
  • One indexed page per county with the nearest substation and contacts
  • FAQ and HowTo structured data, plus a printable kitchen-table version
4

Local news links

Earned links from the outlets that rural counties actually read.

  • A list of 61 weekly papers, county radio and co-op newsletters
  • Localised data cuts sent with each pitch — the county's own numbers
  • Corrections requests where coverage cited outdated project facts
