Light, weight and consequence.

We are twenty-four people on one floor of a Christianshavn warehouse, drawing buildings for a cold, low-lit part of the world. We begin every project in section, because a room is understood by the way light falls through it — never by the shape it makes on a map.

Sixty-one completed buildings in fourteen years. Two thirds of them were already standing when we arrived. We take on eleven projects a year, we detail what we design, and we decline the work we cannot draw ourselves. Enquiries are answered within five working days by a partner.

Silogården

Nordhavn, København — 2023

Grain silo converted to 74 dwellings and a public roof

Four 1962 slip-formed grain silos, condemned in 2016, kept whole. We cut 1,140 openings with a diamond wire saw and left every scar visible; the new dwellings hang from a steel frame that never touches the original shell. The client asked for 84 flats. We built 74 and gave the difference back as a roof anyone can walk onto.

Ø-Huset

Fanø, Jutland — 2024

A courtyard house for a marine biologist and a bookbinder

Four low wings around a court, set 220 m behind the dune line so the roof never breaks the horizon. Untreated Douglas fir on a lime-mortar plinth. The west wing rises one storey to catch the last hour of light in February — the only moment of drama the site would tolerate.

Kalkbruddet Pavilion

Faxe, Sjælland — 2022

Reading room and exhibition hall for a limestone quarry

A 24-metre roof plane on eight steel columns, laid across a working quarry bench. The floor is the quarry: we levelled 40 cm of chalk and sealed it. In summer the hall is a shaded room; in winter it closes to a single glazed bay. Built in eleven weeks between blasting seasons.

Atrium Malmö

Västra Hamnen, Malmö — 2021

Headquarters and archive for Vinge Kapital

A nine-bay concrete frame with a deep base course, planned around a top-lit stair that carries every meeting on the building’s circulation rather than in its rooms. Sixty-three of the 189 panels are recycled aggregate from the demolished 1974 warehouse on the same plot.

02 / Practice

How the studio works

Three commitments that have not changed since 2011 — and that decide most of what we take on.

01

Territory

We work almost entirely within four hundred kilometres of the studio — Sjælland, Jutland, Skåne, the southern Baltic. It is not modesty. It means we know the joiners by name, we can be on site inside three hours, and we understand what forty degrees of winter latitude does to a plan. Two thirds of our work is adaptive reuse, because in this territory the buildings that matter have already been built.

02

Method

Every project begins as a section at 1:50, drawn by hand, before anyone opens a plan. We build physical models at 1:20 in the workshop on the fourth floor — thirty-one of them for Silogården alone. Competition entries are drawn by the same people who will detail the building; there is no separate design department here, and no renderings sold as promises.

03

Material

A library of roughly 1,400 samples, each carrying its own supply chain and its own end of life. We specify lime before cement, oak before steel, and reversible fixings wherever a joint can be undone. Embodied carbon is calculated at concept stage, not at handover: our completed buildings since 2020 average 6.4 kg CO₂e per square metre per year, against a Danish benchmark of 12.

Services: feasibility and heritage survey, competitions, full architectural delivery stages 1–7, interiors, furniture, and post-occupancy review at year one and year five.

Written about

A selection. Full press kit, plans and high-resolution drawings are available to editors on request.

“The silo is the rare conversion that keeps its ghosts. Meridian did not restore the building, and they did not erase it — they left it mid-sentence and moved in.”
