Solving the one-of-a-kind problem: indexing a resale catalogue that sells out daily

+187%

organic sessions to new arrivals

The rail · 8 pieces · 3 sold today

N° 01 · Expired-product handling

Sold, no links: let it go

Silk slip dress, 1997 · 410 Gone

Sold pieces with no backlinks and no search demand now return 410 within an hour of sale, so Google drops them instead of re-crawling a 'sold out' page for weeks.

Before: the 3 sold pieces stay on the rail as live pages saying “Vendu”. Google reads them as soft 404s and keeps coming back.

I · The challenge

Every piece is a collection of one.

Every piece is unique, so sold items left thousands of 404s and Google wasted crawl budget on empty pages instead of new arrivals.

A Parisian resale boutique lives on speed: most pieces sell within four days of being photographed. Yet the site treated a sold jacket like a permanent product, leaving the page live with a “Vendu” banner. Googlebot spent most of each visit on those empty rails and on endless filter combinations, and found the morning's arrivals only after they had already gone.

II · The diagnosis

  1. Technical

    6,200

Sold product pages returned 200 with a 'Vendu' banner: Google classified them as soft 404s and kept re-crawling them.

  2. Technical

    1.4M

Crawlable URL combinations generated by colour × size × price × sort filters on 38 designer pages.

  3. Crawl

    72%

Share of Googlebot requests (from 30 days of server logs) spent on sold, filtered or sorted URLs.

  4. Crawl

    9 days

Median delay between a piece going live and first appearing in the index — most sell in under four.

  5. Content

    5 clicks

Depth of new arrivals from the homepage, behind paginated 'Nouveautés' lists sorted oldest first.

  6. Schema

    0%

Products with availability or itemCondition markup; rich results showed stale prices on sold pieces.

III · The strategy

Four alterations, cut to a catalogue that sells out daily.

Built on our Signal plan (technical seo): fix how Google meets new and sold stock first, then make each live piece read clearly in results.

01

Expired-product handling

A sold-item decision tree, run automatically at the point of sale.

  • No links, no impressions → 410 within the hour
  • Earned links or impressions → 301 to the closest designer × category hub
  • Iconic pieces → noindexed archive linking to similar live stock

02

Faceted navigation

An indexation whitelist for filters, built from search demand.

  • 2,310 designer × category combinations kept indexable
  • Colour, size and price filters canonicalised to their parent
  • Sort and pagination parameters disallowed in robots.txt

03

Crawl budget

Point Googlebot at what is new, and away from what is gone.

  • New-arrivals sitemap regenerated on upload, with true lastmod
  • Arrivals surfaced two clicks from the homepage
  • Server-log monitoring of crawl share by page type, weekly

04

Product schema

Structured data that tells the truth about a one-off piece.

  • Offer price and priceCurrency on every product
  • itemCondition: UsedCondition with a graded condition note
  • availability flipped to SoldOut at sale, before the 410 lands
