Exposition · the challenge

A beautiful instrument nobody abroad could hear

International applicants searched in English and found only state universities, while the academy had weak link authority.

Tonhalle Akademie is a private conservatory in Vienna with forty years of teaching, small studios and a concert calendar of more than sixty public performances a year. In German, locally, people knew it. In English, to the applicant in Seoul, Boston or Leeds typing “study music in Vienna”, it did not exist.

Google filled page one with the state universities and study-abroad portals: domains with thousands of links from decades of press. The academy’s English pages were well written but carried no authority. The brief was simple to state and hard to do: earn the right to be heard alongside them.

II.Andante ♩ = 76

Diagnosis · the audit

Six findings, marked by how loudly they mattered

  1. 01 · Authorityff

A link profile one-thirtieth the size of the state universities

62 referring domains against 1,800–2,400 for the two public universities. Of the 62, 41 were directories, Austrian business listings or the academy's own teachers' personal sites.

  2. 02 · Link gapf

214 music sites cite the competitors but never the academy

Classical magazines, audition-prep blogs and festival pages linked to the state universities when writing about studying music in Vienna. None had heard the academy's story.

  3. 03 · Anchorsmf

71% of anchors branded and in German

Almost no English topical anchors pointed at the English pages, so Google had little reason to trust them for “study music in Vienna” style queries.

  4. 04 · Lost equitymf

38 backlinks pointing at dead concert pages

Past concert and masterclass URLs had been deleted at each season change, leaving press links landing on 404s. Recovering them was the cheapest authority on the table.

  5. 05 · Contentf

Three thin English pages, no link-worthy assets

The English site was a translated brochure: no alumni outcomes, no audition guide, no data or stories a journalist could cite. Nothing to earn a link with.

  6. 06 · Technicalmp

Missing hreflang and no Event markup

German and English versions competed with each other, and 60+ public concerts a year had no Event structured data or stable URLs partners could link to.

Severity uses dynamic markings: ff fortissimo, the loudest problem, down to mp.

III.Moderato ♩ = 96

Orchestration · the strategy

Four voices, one crescendo

Built on our Authority plan (Digital PR & links). Authority is not one tactic played loudly; it is several parts that support each other. Press attention needed pages worth linking to, and edu and event links kept the bass steady between press peaks.

Voice 1 · Melody

Digital PR

A data story journalists could not get elsewhere: the academy's own anonymised data on practice hours, audition outcomes and the cost of studying music across eight European capitals.

  • “The Cost of a Concerto” cost-of-study index, refreshed each spring
  • Pitched to arts desks in the UK, US, Korea, Japan and Germany
  • Expert commentary offered to journalists covering conservatory admissions

24 press links

Voice 2 · Counter-melody

Alumni stories

Twelve alumni profiles told in English, each pitched to the alum's hometown and instrument-specific press — where one story naturally earns a link back to the academy.

  • Interviews with alumni now in orchestras, opera houses and competitions
  • Hometown-press pitches in eight countries
  • Instrument magazines and podcasts for the specialists

23 press links

Voice 3 · Bass line

Edu links

Steady, durable academic links: exchange agreements, scholarship listings and university resource pages that guide international students to Vienna.

  • Partner pages with the academy's 9 exchange conservatories
  • Listings in scholarship and study-abroad directories with editorial review
  • An English audition-preparation guide that careers offices link to

12 edu domains

Voice 4 · Percussion

Event partnerships

Public concerts and masterclasses given stable URLs and Event markup, then co-promoted with festivals and concert series that list partners on their own sites.

  • Evergreen URLs for each concert series instead of per-season pages
  • Partner listings with two summer festivals and a chamber series
  • 38 broken concert links redirected to their living equivalents
