Booking the slopes: how a Bansko ski school won the season before the first snowfall

Each run is a keyword, graded by how hard it is to rank for. A skier waits at the top station while a keyword sits outside the top 100 and glides towards the village as it climbs to position one. The chairlift towers on the left are the 9 months; press play to ski the season.

Conditions report · the challenge

Fresh powder, but only one lift running

Foreign visitors booked lessons months ahead in English, Romanian and Greek, but the school only ranked in Bulgarian.

Bansko fills with families from Bucharest, Thessaloniki and London every winter, and they plan early: the best instructors for Christmas week are gone by October. Those families search in their own language, months before they arrive.

Todorka Snowschool had excellent instructors and a loyal Bulgarian following, but its website, profile and reviews spoke only Bulgarian. At the start, 1 of the 8 runs on the map had a skier on it. Foreign bookings went to resellers who took a cut and chose the instructor.

Month 1 · 8 findings

  • TechnicalRun closed

    One language, one URL tree

Every page lived at a single Bulgarian URL with a client-side language toggle. Google indexed only the Cyrillic version; English, Romanian and Greek searchers never saw it.

  • TechnicalRun closed

    No hreflang, no localised titles

Titles and meta descriptions were Bulgarian only, so even branded English searches showed a snippet the visitor could not read.

  • TechnicalCaution

    Booking widget invisible to crawlers

Lesson types and prices were rendered inside a third-party iframe. No crawlable page described private, group or kids lessons.

  • LocalRun closed

    Wrong primary category

The Google Business Profile was filed under “School”, not “Ski school”, and had no English description, services or lesson products.

  • LocalCaution

    Two addresses, one school

The gondola meeting point and the town office were listed with different names and phone formats across eleven directories.

  • LocalCaution

    74 reviews, zero replies

Reviews came almost only from Bulgarian guests, none were answered, and the newest was seven weeks old at the start of spring.

  • ContentRun closed

No pages for the weeks foreigners book

UK February half-term, Romania’s 1 December weekend, Greek Christmas and Theophany drive most foreign demand. None had a page.

  • ContentCaution

    Prices in leva only

Visitors comparing schools from Bucharest, Thessaloniki or London saw no euro prices and no group sizes, and bounced to resellers.

The strategy · four lifts

Open a lift for every language

Built on our Local plan: four tactics, each one a lift that carries a different group of searchers to the top of the mountain.

Lift A

Google Business Profile

Primary category changed to Ski school, with services for private, group, kids and snowboard lessons. Descriptions and Q&A in four languages, weekly posts on snow conditions, and photos tagged at the gondola meeting point.

Local pack 7th → 2nd

Lift B

Multilingual pages

Server-rendered /en, /ro and /el trees with hreflang and self-referencing canonicals, translated by native instructors rather than machine output. Euro prices, group sizes and meeting points on every lesson page.

Languages ranking 1 → 4

Lift C

Seasonal landing pages

One page per week that foreign families book ahead: Christmas, New Year, Theophany, Romania’s 1 December, UK February half-term. Each published 4–6 months early with Course and Offer schema so it is indexed before demand peaks.

Black runs ranked by October

Lift D

Review strategy

A QR card handed over at the end of each lesson, asking in the guest’s own language. Every review answered in the language it was written in within 48 hours, with the instructor and lesson type named.
