How a palenque making 8,000 bottles a year earned links from the world's spirits press

+71authoritative spirits & travel linksin 12 months · Oaxaca, Mexico

Every flag strung above is a link the palenque earned, cut from the initials of the publication that gave it and dyed by that title’s authority. Move your cursor; they catch the evening wind.

The challenge

Distributors searched. They found an opossum.

Export distributors were googling the brand and finding nothing credible. Without links or reviews, it could not rank even for its own agave varieties.

The palenque bottles about 8,000 bottles a year from espadín and wild agaves harvested on the slopes around Santiago Matatlán. Three importers had tasted it at a fair and wanted to talk — then googled the name. “Tlacuache” is Mexico’s opossum, and page one said as much.

With 14 referring domains, most of them scraped directories, Google had no reason to trust the site on anything — not its own name, and certainly not the agave varieties it is known for in Oaxaca.

Audit & diagnosis

Six cuts in the tissue

  • Brand SERPCritical

Page one belonged to a marsupial

“Tlacuache” is the Mexican opossum. Wildlife pages, a cartoon and a misspelt reseller filled the top ten; the brand’s own site sat at position 14.

  • LinksCritical

14 referring domains, 9 of them directories

No editorial link from any spirits, travel or food title. Two scraped listings pointed at a dead /tienda URL.

  • TechnicalHigh

    Spanish-only site, no hreflang

English-speaking distributors landed on Spanish pages with no alternate. Product pages shipped no Organization, Product or Brand schema.

  • ContentHigh

Agave varieties had one paragraph between them

Espadín, tobalá, tepeztate and madrecuishe shared a single page — nothing for Google to rank for the 52 variety terms we tracked.

  • TrustMedium

No press kit, no certification details

Journalists had no photography, tasting notes, batch sizes or CRM certification number to cite, so they cited no one.

  • ReviewsMedium

    Zero third-party tasting notes

Not one competition result or reviewer score anywhere a distributor could verify it.

The strategy

Give the press something worth cutting a flag for

Built on our Authority plan (Digital PR & links): stories that only this palenque could tell, made easy to cite in two languages.

  1. TÁCTICA 01

    Digital PR

Three data-led stories built from the palenque’s own records: how many years each wild agave takes to mature, harvest yields by variety, and an 8,000-bottle ceiling explained.

    26 links

  2. TÁCTICA 02

    Spirits-press outreach

A tasting-sample programme for 40 vetted spirits writers, a downloadable press kit and batch-numbered fact sheets journalists could quote without emailing.

    21 links

  3. TÁCTICA 03

    Spanish-English link building

Bilingual pages with hreflang pairs; Spanish features pitched to Mexican drinks press, English versions to importers’ trade titles — each linking its own language.

    24 links

  4. TÁCTICA 04

    Brand SERP

Organization and Product schema, a consistent entity name across profiles and a dedicated ‘About the name’ page to separate the brand from the opossum.
