Four links and a language wall
The outfitter's Bulgarian-only site had four backlinks. Foreign adventure travellers never found it while planning Balkan trips.
Kresna sits on one of the best-value whitewater runs in the Balkans, two hours from Sofia airport. But travellers planning a Bulgaria trip in English searched, found Greek and Bosnian operators with dozens of press mentions, and booked there. The gorge was invisible to the people most likely to pay for it.
Audit findings, graded by hazard
- Class VLinks4 referring domains, two of them dead directories. Greek and Bosnian rivals averaged 70.
- Class VLanguageBulgarian-only site, no hreflang, no English booking path — foreign intent bounced.
- Class IVLinkabilityNothing a journalist could cite: no data, no press page, no images cleared for use.
- Class IIIBrandCyrillic and Latin brand names split mentions; 11 unlinked mentions found.
- Class IIILocalMissing from the municipal tourism portal and the regional visitor guide.
- Class IVContentNo page for ‘rafting Bulgaria’ intent; seasons and safety only in a PDF.
02 · Reading the line
Start in the eddy, build to the big drop
Built on our Authority plan (Digital PR & links). Rather than one launch and a hope, we sequenced four tactics so every push gave the next one something to stand on: local trust, then niche credibility, then a story big enough for national desks.
- 01
Digital PR
Reactive and proactive pitching around the summer and shoulder-season travel calendar, with English and German spokesperson sheets.
- 02
Adventure-blog outreach
Forty hand-picked paddling and Balkan travel blogs, each offered a guided descent and a ready-made GPX, photo and safety kit.
- 03
Data-led stories
The Balkan Whitewater Index: 14 rivers scored on season, gradient, flow and price, with a published method and embeddable charts.
- 04
Local tourism links
Bilingual listings with the municipality, the regional visitor portal and partner guesthouses — the eddy before the drop.
03 · The run
Five rapids, 58 links of splash
Each PR push graded like a rapid: the harder the line, the bigger the outlets and the splash. Scroll to run the river.

The Eddy
Local tourism links
Bilingual listings and partner pages with the Kresna municipality tourism desk, the Struma valley wine route, two guesthouses and the regional visitor portal. Low drama, but it put the first English-language trust signals on the map.

The Index Drop
Data-led stories

Digital PR
Reactive follow-ups as summer travel features went to print: a cost-of-a-weekend angle, a ‘Europe's cheapest whitewater’ chart and a spokesperson sheet in English and German. The index started appearing in roundups we never pitched.
