The challenge

Every autumn, the tide went out — and took the rankings with it.

Collections were deleted each season, wiping ranking history, and marketplaces outranked the brand for its own product names.

Saltwhistle cuts its suits from recycled fishing nets in a Miami studio, and sells through its own store and two wholesale marketplaces. Each September the merchandising team deleted the season's collection pages to make room for the next. Each spring the new pages started from zero — while the marketplaces, whose listings never moved, collected the brand's own product-name searches at full price.

Diagnosis · low-water survey

Six findings, charted like hazards on an approach.

  1. 01Architecture

    Seasonal collections deleted every autumn

14 collection URLs returned 404 within two years; 312 referring domains and their accumulated ranking history were thrown away each season.

    Critical
  2. 02Feed

31% of products disapproved in the shopping feed

Missing GTINs, a single colour per parent product and no material attributes — so marketplace listings filled the shopping units instead.

    Critical
  3. 03Duplication

    Brand copy syndicated word-for-word

Product titles and descriptions were identical to the wholesale marketplace listings, leaving search engines no reason to prefer the brand.

    High
  4. 04Rich results

    No Product or Review markup

1,100+ first-party reviews existed but were rendered client-side and unmarked. Marketplaces showed stars; the brand didn't.

    High
  5. 05Performance

Mobile LCP of 4.1s on product pages

A 2.8 MB autoplay hero carousel, four web fonts and eleven third-party tags ahead of the main image.

    High
  6. 06Variants

    Colour variants canonicalised inconsistently

126 colourway URLs self-canonical, 40 pointing to deleted parents — splitting signals across near-duplicates.

The strategy

Raise the sea floor, not just the next wave.

Four tactics, built on our Commerce SEO plan — sequenced so that the structural fixes were in place before the spring swell arrived.

Tactic 1

Product feeds

Rebuilt the shopping feed from the catalogue up: GTINs, every colour and size as its own item, recycled-content and UPF attributes, sale-price windows. The brand's own listings, not the marketplaces', now fill the product units.

Tactic 2

Seasonal collection SEO

Collections stopped being disposable. Twenty-two evergreen URLs — by silhouette, fabric and coverage — hold the authority year-round; each season's drop is nested inside, pre-indexed weeks before launch and folded back in when it sells through.

Tactic 3

Review schema

1,100+ first-party reviews rendered server-side with Product, Offer and AggregateRating markup, plus a reviews hub. Star snippets on branded results closed the trust gap that sent shoppers to marketplaces.

Tactic 4

Core Web Vitals

Autoplay carousel replaced with one responsive still, fonts cut from four to one system stack, tags deferred, the LCP image preloaded. Mobile LCP fell from 4.1s to 1.7s across every product template.

October organic revenue modelled at $136k, 3.4× the previous low. The trough now sits at last year's April.
