How a family-run Wadi Rum camp became the trusted voice on desert stays

organic sessions over 11 months, one woven band at a time.

The rug on this page is the engagement. Each weft band is a month of work, each lozenge motif a content cluster we published, and when the last row is tied off the pattern shows the rock arch the camp sits beneath. Scrub through it, or weave it again from month one.

01The challengeالتحدي

Search results for Wadi Rum camps were full of near-identical listings and fake reviews. The family behind the camp had generations of desert knowledge but no content showing it.

Three generations had guided travellers through Wadi Rum: which wells still hold water in August, where the dunes are firm enough for a jeep, the Bedouin names for the stars overhead. None of it was online. Search showed the same stock photo of bubble domes on a dozen listings, and AI assistants repeated their contradictory claims. A traveller had no way to tell a family camp from a reseller, so they booked on price through an aggregator that took a fifth of every night.

02The diagnosisالتشخيص

Six loose threads, found before a single guide was written.

  • 01Content

The camp site had four pages and 610 words in total. No guide answered a single question travellers actually ask: routes, seasons, food, safety.

Fix: Nine topic clusters, 58 guides, each built from the family's own knowledge.

  • 02Trust

The top 20 results for Wadi Rum camps were 14 near-identical aggregator listings. Review velocity on three of them pointed to bought reviews.

Fix: Named authors with tribal and guiding credentials, first-hand photos, and a published guide to spotting fake reviews.

  • 03AI answers

0 of 180 tracked desert-travel prompts cited the camp. Assistants summarised aggregator copy that contradicted itself on prices and distances.

Fix: Answer-first passages with measured distances, durations and costs an assistant can lift verbatim.

  • 04Schema

No structured data at all. Tours were images of a printed price list, so search engines could not read stops, durations or prices.

Fix: LodgingBusiness, TouristTrip with ordered ItemList stops, FAQPage and Person entities for the guides.

  • 05Bilingual

No Arabic content, although a third of Jordanian and Gulf demand for desert stays searches in Arabic.

Fix: Arabic originals written beside the English, Arabic slugs, reciprocal hreflang en / ar / x-default.

  • 06Technical

Mobile LCP of 5.1s from a 9 MB hero video; the booking form was an iframe the crawler could not see.

Fix: Poster image under 120 KB, LCP 1.9s, a crawlable direct booking page with rate snippets.

03The strategyالاستراتيجية

Four threads, woven together on the Content Engine plan.

Content Engine is our publishing programme: research, writing and markup on a fixed monthly rhythm. Here the rhythm was the loom: one cluster a month, nine clusters, 58 guides, each checked by the family before it went live.

  1. Topic clusters

Nine clusters, one per month of weaving, each with a pillar guide and five to nine supporting guides. Every guide links up to its pillar and across to the neighbouring cluster a traveller needs next: routes to food, food to seasons, seasons to itineraries.

  2. AI Overviews

Each guide opens with a two-sentence answer, then a table of facts: distance in km, time on the jeep, water stops, cost range in JOD. Assistants quote passages that are specific and verifiable, so that is how every passage was written.

  3. Itinerary schema

Routes and multi-day trips are marked up as TouristTrip with ordered stops, coordinates and durations, so a search engine can read a three-day Petra–Rum–Aqaba plan as a plan, not a block of prose.

  4. Arabic-English content

The family wrote in Arabic first and an editor shaped the English alongside, never a machine translation. Bedouin star names, dishes and place names keep their Arabic spelling with an English gloss.
