Tested on 52 gsm cream paper, 1.1 mm stub, room temperature. Modelled scenario.

01 · The challenge

Amazon owned the checkout. Nobody owned the research.

Amazon and big-box stationers took every product query; Quillmoor needed to win the long, nerdy research phase before purchase.

Quillmoor is three people, a workbench and roughly 900 inks in a shop in Portland. Any query that sounds like shopping, such as “buy blue fountain pen ink”, returned marketplace listings and big-box chains with identical copy and lower prices. Competing there meant paying for clicks the shop could not afford.

But fountain-pen buyers research for a long time before they buy. They want to know how an ink shades, whether it sheens, how it behaves on cheap paper, and how it compares with the one they already own. Those questions had no good answers, and Quillmoor had the inks, the paper and the patience to answer every one.

02 · Diagnosis

The test sheet: six blots on the page.

A crawl of 2,140 URLs, a content inventory, a SERP study of 1,200 hobbyist queries and an AI Overview audit, in the first three weeks.

ContentHigh

Manufacturer copy on 94% of product pages

Ink descriptions were pasted from distributors, identical to Amazon and three big-box sites. Google had no reason to rank the smallest copy.

ContentHigh

No answer for the research phase

Hobbyists ask about sheen, shading, dry time and paper. The site had 11 blog posts, none of them about a specific ink.

TechnicalMedium

312 thin tag and filter URLs indexed

Colour, brand and size facets produced crawlable near-duplicates that diluted the category pages.

TechnicalMedium

No Product or ItemList schema

Swatch colour, bottle size and ink properties were image-only, so neither search engines nor AI answers could read them.

LinkingMedium

Orphaned posts, flat navigation

Old posts sat four or more clicks deep with no links to the inks they discussed.

AI searchLow

Zero citations in AI Overviews

Answers about 'inks that sheen' cited forums and two large retailers. Quillmoor's expertise was in-store only.

03 · The strategy

Build the internet’s ink-swatch library, then let it sell.

The engagement ran on our Content Engine plan: a monthly allowance of researched, tested pages plus the linking and markup that make them findable by search engines and AI answers. Four tactics did the work.

  1. 1

    Topic clusters

    Four hubs, 380 spokes

    • Swatches, Comparisons, Nibs & paper and Beginners each got a hub page.
    • Every swatch page uses one template: hex sample, sheen and shading scores, dry time, water resistance, and the paper it was tested on.
  2. 2

    Comparison content

    62 head-to-heads

    • Each 'X vs Y' page shows both inks side by side on the same paper with the same nib.
    • It gives a verdict in the first paragraph, then a table, then the trade-offs, so it is useful before anyone buys.
  3. 3

    AI Overviews

Answers that are easy to quote

    • The first two sentences answer the question; measured properties sit in plain-HTML tables.
    • Product and ItemList schema, plus a dated method note, explain how each swatch was tested.
  4. 4

    Internal linking

    Hub → spoke → product

    • A 'similar inks' module links by colour family and property.
    • Each comparison links to both swatches and both product pages; breadcrumbs follow the cluster, not the shop menu.
