Data journalism
Detections cleaned, mapped and written up as stories a reporter can file in an hour: one headline finding, a chart, a CSV and a named scientist available for calls.
A fictional business. The figures are a modelled scenario, not a client result.
Pikeline Wild Trust — Wildlife conservation nonprofit · Denver
Six years of infrared detections were sitting in PDFs. We turned them into stories newsrooms wanted to run — and pointed the links they earned at the pages that fund the work.
01The challenge
Strong research rarely left PDF reports, and the trust's site had little authority for donor and volunteer searches.
The trust runs 46 motion-triggered cameras across the Front Range. Researchers cited the findings; reporters occasionally mentioned them. But searches for “volunteer wildlife Denver” or “donate to conservation in Colorado” surfaced national charities with a hundred times the link equity, and the trust sat on page four.
02Diagnosis · camera log
38 research reports existed only as PDFs; Google indexed 6 of them and none ranked for a research query.
77 referring domains, 61% of them directories or partner logos; no national news link in five years.
412 web mentions of the trust or its data with no link back — mostly local news and school pages.
Zero .edu links, despite three universities citing the trust’s field data in published coursework.
Donate page had 140 words, no internal links in and no Organization or DonateAction markup.
Trail-cam galleries shipped 9 MB uncompressed JPEGs; mobile LCP sat at 5.8 s on volunteer pages.
03The strategy
Built on our Authority plan (digital pr & links): four tactics, run as one loop, with every earned link routed toward the Donate and Volunteer hubs.
Detections cleaned, mapped and written up as stories a reporter can file in an hour: one headline finding, a chart, a CSV and a named scientist available for calls.
Seasonal hooks — lynx denning, bear wake-up, elk rut — pitched to science, outdoors and national desks with embargoes and exclusive regional angles.
An open-licence dataset and lesson pack for university ecology courses, each asking for a citation to the methodology page rather than the homepage.
All 412 brand and data mentions triaged by authority, then contacted with the precise page to cite. Reclaimed links pointed at the Donate and Volunteer hubs.
