The challenge

Two languages. Two hundred and thirty listings. Zero agreement.

Searches mixed English and Swahili, and listings for individual artisans were scattered and inconsistent across directories.

Mtaa Fundi dispatches 120 artisans — plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters and gas fitters — across Nairobi. A tenant in South B types “fundi wa maji”; a landlord in Westlands types “plumber near me”. Both want the same thing in the next two hours, and neither was finding Mtaa Fundi. Classified sites and WhatsApp groups caught the demand instead.

Audit & diagnosis

Six faults found under the bonnet

  1. NAP

    One business, 41 spellings

Mtaa Fundi, M-Taa Fundi, Mtaafundi Ltd: 230 directory listings carried 41 name variants, 17 phone numbers and three dead Kilimani addresses. Google could not tell they were the same network.

  2. GBP

    Profile in the wrong category

The Business Profile sat under 'Employment agency', with no service area, no services list and 6 photos. It never appeared for plumber, electrician or carpenter intents.

  3. LANG

    Zero Kiswahili pages

Roughly 38% of modelled demand was in Kiswahili or Sheng ('fundi wa maji', 'fundi mtaani'). The site was English-only, so that demand went to classifieds and Facebook groups.

  4. PAGES

One city page for 4.4M people

A single 'Nairobi' page tried to rank for every estate from Ruaka to Rongai. No estate names in titles, no local proof, no internal links between trades and places.

  5. SPEED

    6.8 s on a mid-range phone

Most searches came from Android handsets on mobile data. A 2.9 MB hero slider pushed LCP to 6.8 s; the WhatsApp button loaded last.

  6. PROFILES

    120 artisans, 120 different stories

Individual fundis had self-made directory listings pointing to personal numbers, splitting reviews and confusing the entity behind the network.

Route 03

The strategy

4 decals, one livery

Built on our Local plan: the Local playbook, painted estate by estate and in both of Nairobi’s search languages.

Decal 1

Neighbourhood pages

“Kila mtaa, ukurasa wake”

Every estate gets its own page

  • 32 estate pages, each with the fundis based there, typical call-out times and recent job types
  • Trade x estate hubs (plumber Kilimani, stima Embakasi) linked from both directions
  • Landmarks and stage names in copy, the way people actually give directions

Decal 2

Google Business Profile

“Ramani ni yetu”

The map is ours

  • Primary category moved to Handyman, with Plumber and Electrician as secondaries
  • Service area drawn estate by estate; 34 services with Kiswahili descriptions
  • Weekly job photos posted by the fundis themselves; review prompts sent by SMS after each job

Decal 3

Swahili content

“Tunaongea lugha yako”

We speak your language

  • Native-written Kiswahili pages, not machine translation, with hreflang sw-KE / en-KE pairs
  • Sheng phrasing kept where search data showed it ('fundi mtaani', 'bei poa')
  • How-to guides: kutengeneza bomba, kubadilisha soketi, with price ranges in shillings

Decal 4

Local citations

“Jina moja, namba moja”

One name, one number

  • 230 listings cleaned to one canonical name, phone and address format
  • Artisan listings re-pointed to their profile on the network site
  • Duplicate and dead listings merged or removed across 19 directories
