01The challenge

Every December, the water turns. So does the search.

Every December, homeowners search for 'green pool fix' and the content they found was American, using units and products unavailable in NZ.

Auckland's first humid week after heavy rain turns neglected pools green almost overnight. Homeowners reach for their phones, type some version of “green pool fix”, and land on guides written for Florida: pounds per ten thousand gallons, products from stores that do not exist here, and advice timed for a Northern Hemisphere summer.

Kōwhai Pool Care had the expertise — a crew that clears dozens of green pools every summer — but none of it was on the page. The site ranked for its own name and little else, so the busiest search week of the year passed it by.

02Diagnosis

The water test: six readings out of range.

Before dosing anything, we tested. A crawl of the site, a study of 340 New Zealand pool queries and a review of who actually won each result page produced a report that reads like a bad pool test.

  • Localisation

    0 of 41Low

Not one existing post gave doses in litres or named a product sold in NZ. Top-ranking answers said “lbs per 10,000 gallons”.

  • Topical depth

    9 pagesLow

Nine thin service pages and a blog with no internal links. Google had no reason to treat the site as an authority on pool chemistry.

  • Publishing timing

    Dec 4High

Seasonal posts went live the week demand spiked — too late to be crawled, indexed and trusted before the peak.

  • Answer extraction

    0 blocksAbsent

No concise answer near the top, no FAQ structure: nothing an AI Overview or featured snippet could quote.

  • Video

    12 orphansAbsent

Twelve good crew videos sat on YouTube, never embedded, with no VideoObject schema or key moments.

  • Conversion path

    1 CTALow

Every page ended in “call us”. No route from a DIY guide to a maintenance contract for readers who give up.

03The treatment

Four reagents, dosed in the right order.

Built on our Content Engine plan (Content & AI search): a publishing system rather than a pile of posts. Each tactic below fixes one of the failed readings.

  1. ClStep 1

    Topic clusters

    Dose: 6 pillars · 58 spokes

    • Pillars for green water, cloudy water, salt systems, balancing, spas and seasonal care.
    • Every spoke links up to its pillar and across to one sibling; suburb pages link in.
    • Doses in litres, products stocked at NZ pool shops, and Auckland's rainfall in mind.
  2. pHStep 2

    Seasonal content

    Dose: Publish 12–14 weeks early

    • A calendar keyed to NZ seasons, not US ones: spring opening lands in August, not March.
    • Guides go live a full quarter before demand, so they are indexed and earning links by December.
    • A November refresh pass re-checks every figure and date before the panic week.
  3. TAStep 3

    AI Overviews

Dose: Answer in the first 60 words

    • Each guide opens with a direct, quotable answer, then a dosing table, then the why.
    • FAQ blocks mirror the exact questions people ask, phrased in NZ English.
    • Named, consistent units and products make the answer safe for engines to cite.
  4. CYAStep 4

    Video schema

Dose: 12 videos · key moments

    • Existing crew videos re-cut to the one task each guide teaches.
    • Embedded on the matching guide with VideoObject, transcript and Clip markup.
    • Video thumbnails now appear beside the guide in results for “how to” queries.
