How a 14-van rental fleet turned road-trip searches into direct bookings

Travel & Leisure · Bulgaria · Modelled scenario

11 months, 11 stops. Dotted line: the drive home.

01The challenge

Fourteen vans, one empty page.

The booking engine hid every van behind JavaScript filters, so Google saw a single empty page. All demand went to campervan marketplaces at 20% commission.

Kitka runs a 14-van fleet out of Plovdiv. Its own site had the best photos, the real prices and the owners on the phone, but the fleet only existed after a browser ran the booking widget. Search engines fetched a spinner. So every planner who searched for a campervan in Bulgaria met Kitka's vans on someone else's marketplace, where each booking cost a fifth of its value. In the modelled baseline about 84% of bookings arrived that way.

02Audit and diagnosis

Reading the legend before the drive.

A rendered-versus-raw crawl, a parameter audit of the booking engine, a schema and SERP-feature review against three marketplaces, and keyword research split into rental intent and trip-planning intent.

  • Rendering

    Critical

The booking engine renders in the browser. The HTML Google fetches holds a spinner and no vans, so 14 vehicles were one empty page.

  • Faceted navigation

    Critical

Filters lived in JavaScript state with no URLs. Searches like "pet friendly campervan" had nothing to land on.

  • Structured data

    High

No Vehicle, Product or Offer schema. Marketplaces showed price and rating in results; Kitka showed a bare blue link.

  • Parameters

    High

The calendar appends ?from=&to= to every link. Once crawlable it would have spawned near-infinite duplicate URLs.

  • Content

    Medium

No destination content. Road-trip searches carry nine times the volume of rental searches, and Kitka was absent from all of them.

  • Local

    Medium

Business profile filed as a car rental agency, no van photos, and three different phone numbers across listings.

03The strategy

Four signposts from the marketplace to the front door.

Built on our Commerce SEO plan: make the inventory crawlable, make each van a product search engines understand, then send trip planners down a road that ends at a booking.

  1. 1.Vehicle listing schema

Each of the 14 vans got its own URL with Vehicle, Product and Offer markup: berths, gearbox, fuel type, pet policy, nightly price by season and availability, all in the server HTML. That is what earns the price and rating line marketplaces used to own.

  2. 2.Faceted pages

Filters became URLs, but only where people search. Keyword data picked 24 combinations (pet friendly, automatic, 4x4, sleeps four, winter-ready) to index with their own copy; every other combination is canonicalised and left out of the sitemap.

  3. 3.Booking-engine SEO

The engine now server-renders the fleet, canonicalises date parameters back to the clean van URL, renders prices as text and keeps checkout steps out of the index, so crawl budget is spent on vans rather than calendars.

  4. 4.Route guides

Nineteen road-trip guides (Rhodopes loop, Rila and Pirin, Plovdiv to Ohrid, the Adriatic leg) with drive times, overnight spots and border notes. Each ends in a three-van shortlist with a prefilled booking link.
