Act I · The challenge

Strangers were selling its own seats.

Ticket aggregators outranked the theatre for its own shows, taking fees and the customer relationship; event listings lacked structured data.

Search for a show at Gaslight Row and the first three results belonged to resellers. Each ticket they sold carried a booking fee for the audience and a commission for the platform, and the theatre never learned who had bought it, so it couldn't invite them back. For a 200-seat house running on thin margins, that was the difference between a season that paid and one that didn't.

The brief: make the theatre the obvious place to book its own productions, on Google Search and on Maps, without breaking the box office.

Act II · The diagnosis

Programme notes from the audit

  1. Scene iTechnical

Show dates were invisible to Google

The What's On listing was injected by a third-party ticketing widget after load. Rendered HTML held no dates, prices or venue, and none of the 52 productions carried Event markup.

  2. Scene iiTechnical

Show pages died with the run

Each production's page was deleted at closing night, returning 404s. Eleven seasons of reviews and press links pointed at nothing, while aggregator pages for the same shows lived on.

  3. Scene iiiLocal

Listed as an "event venue", not a theatre

The Google Business Profile used the wrong primary category, had no performances posted, and its hours showed the box office closed on the very evenings shows ran.

  4. Scene ivLocal

    Two names across 31 citations

"Gaslight Row Theatre" and the building's old name, "The Gaslight Rooms", were split across directories, diluting the map-pack signal for 'theatre near me'.

  5. Scene vContent

    Aggregators wrote better programmes

Ticket platforms published cast, running time, age guidance and access details. The theatre's own show pages averaged 60 words and a poster.

  6. Scene viContent

Every Book button left the building

Booking links sent visitors to the aggregator's checkout, so local press reviews linked there too: 74% of review links in the sample credited a reseller, not the venue.

Act III · The strategy

Four acts to win back the box office

The programme was built on our Local plan, which pairs map-pack work with the pages and markup that let a venue outrank resellers for its own name.

  1. 01

    Event schema

Every performance rendered server-side as an Event with startDate, eventStatus, location, performer and an Offer pointing at the theatre's own checkout. Sold-out and rescheduled nights update the markup automatically, so the rich result never lies.

  2. 02

    Google Business Profile

Primary category corrected to Performing arts theatre, show-night hours added, a post for each opening, accessibility attributes filled in and the 31 citations consolidated on one name.

  3. 03

    Show landing pages

One permanent URL per production with cast, running time, access performances, reviews and a booking module on the page. After closing night the page becomes an archive record instead of a 404.

  4. 04

    Local PR

A press kit with direct booking links for every opening, and a request to reviewers to link the venue. Listings sites and the Ancoats business association pointed at show pages, not resellers.
