IThe challenge

Excellent research, pressed flat and filed away.

Fynbos produced excellent research locked in PDFs, so trustees and HR leaders never found it in search.

Fynbos advises retirement-fund boards across South Africa. Its consulting actuaries publish more serious research on fund governance than most of their larger competitors — benchmark surveys, valuation primers, analysis of the two-pot reforms.

But every study ended its life as a PDF attached to an email. Trustees and HR leaders typing plain questions into search found product pages from asset managers, or forum threads, never the firm that had actually measured the answer.

The brief: make the archive findable, make each figure citable, and turn readers into trustees who sign up for the quarterly briefing — without diluting the rigour that makes the work worth reading.

IIAudit · six specimens collected

Diagnosis, specimen by specimen.

Each problem found in the three-week audit was catalogued like a herbarium accession: what it is, where it was found and what we determined to do about it. Open a drawer to examine one.

Wk 1, sheet 3

Fourteen years of research lived only as image-heavy PDFs. 41 of 64 had no text layer, no title metadata and no links back to the site; search engines indexed 9 of them, all under file names like 'FINAL_v7_web.pdf'.

DETERMINATION · REMEDY

Each report re-published as a crawlable HTML edition with a summary, charts as accessible SVG and the PDF kept as a gated download.

IIIStrategy · four plates

Four tactics, mounted together.

Built on our Content Engine plan: research becomes pages, pages become clusters, clusters earn citations, and downloads feed the briefing list.

  1. PLATE I

    Original research

Protea cynaroides — the king protea

The annual Retirement Fund Benchmark was rebuilt as the centrepiece: 180 funds surveyed, every chart published as its own page with a citable headline figure and a downloadable table.

    • 3 flagship studies
    • 46 citable figures
    • 11 press pick-ups
  2. PLATE II

    Topic clusters

    Erica cerinthoides — fire heath

Six clusters built around what trustees govern: two-pot system, Regulation 28, default portfolios, valuations, annuitisation and governance. Each has a pillar, 8–14 supporting answers and a glossary.

    • 6 pillars
    • 71 supporting pages
    • 1,240 internal links
  3. PLATE III

    Downloadable reports

    Elegia capensis — broom reed

PDFs became lead magnets, not hiding places: the HTML edition ranks, the designed PDF is offered at the moment of intent, and every download feeds the trustee briefing list.

    • 64 reports re-issued
    • 2-field form
    • Briefing opt-in at download
  4. PLATE IV

    AI Overviews

    Leucospermum cordifolium — pincushion

Question-led headings, short answer blocks, dated figures and named authors gave AI Overviews something precise to quote — with Fynbos as the attributed source.

    • 40 answer blocks
    • Dataset schema
    • 31 citations tracked
