Conditions on arrival

Flat spell, onshore wind.

Rental bookings came from aggregators taking 20% commission; Driftmark's own listings were unclaimed at one location and miscategorised at another.

Three shops on three of San Diego's busiest beaches should have owned every “rental near me” search from Pacific Beach to La Jolla Shores. Instead, the aggregators sat on the peak: 72% of rentals came through them, each one paying away a fifth of the ticket, and the customer relationship with it. Driftmark's own profiles were the weakest swell in the water.

Hazard report · the audit

  1. Local · High hazard

    Ocean Beach profile unclaimed

The OB shop's Google Business Profile had never been verified. A user-suggested edit had changed its hours to 9–5, so it showed as closed during the dawn patrol and sunset rental windows.

  2. Local · High hazard

    Pacific Beach miscategorised

Primary category was “Sporting goods store”. It was invisible for “surf shop” and “surfboard rental service”, the two categories that win the map pack on the strand.

  3. Technical · Caution

Bookings lived on someone else's domain

The Rent button went to an aggregator widget on a third-party subdomain. No rental page on driftmark had prices, stock or a crawlable booking path.

  4. Technical · Caution

    No structured data at all

No LocalBusiness, no Offer, no ReserveAction. Google had no machine-readable link between a shop, a board and a bookable time slot.

  5. Content · Caution

One “Locations” page for three beaches

A single page listed three addresses in a table. No page could rank for “rental Pacific Beach” or “wetsuit hire La Jolla Shores”.

  6. Reviews · High hazard

14 reviews at La Jolla, none answered

Rating 3.9 at the busiest shop; the most recent negative review (a dinged deposit) sat unanswered at the top of the profile for five months.

  7. Citations · Caution

Three phone numbers for one shop

Yelp, Apple Maps and two surf directories carried an old PB number and a former suite address. NAP consistency across 41 citations: 58%.

Reading the break · the strategy

Four layers of the same forecast.

Built on our Local plan (Local SEO). Each tactic moves one layer of the chart above, and each layer is a number the shops can feel at the till.

Moves: Wave height

Google Business Profile

Claimed and verified Ocean Beach; set “Surf shop” primary with “Surfboard rental service”, “Wetsuit rental” and “Surf school” secondary at all three. Hours mirror first and last light by season. Weekly posts carry the morning surf report and today's rental stock.

Moves: Line-up

Local landing pages

One page per beach: the break, parking, the walk to the water, the boards on the rack, prices and a live availability slot. Each page owns its own neighbourhood terms instead of all three cannibalising one URL.

Moves: Period

Booking schema

LocalBusiness and Product/Offer markup for each rental tier, with a ReserveAction pointing at Driftmark's own first-party booking flow. The Reserve button on the profile now lands on driftmark, not on an aggregator.

Moves: Offshore wind

Review strategy

A QR tag on every board's leash plug, scanned at return; review asks timed to the rinse-off, not the checkout. Every review answered within 48 hours by the shop that served the customer.
