Corrie Bothy Glamping

How six glamping pods near Ben Nevis stayed booked through the off-season

Eco glamping pods · Scottish Highlands · Fort William

Headline figure

24% → 61%

Off-season occupancy 24% → 61% over 10 months · 56.82° N, 5.11° W

The challenge

Six pods, a dark sky, and nobody could find them in the winter

Winter occupancy fell under 25%. The pods were missing from map results for searches like 'cabins near Fort William' and 'dark sky stays Scotland'.

From November to March, Corrie Bothy Glamping relied on online travel agents and repeat guests. Winter is the best time to visit Lochaber, with long nights, the occasional aurora and empty walking trails, but the business was invisible on Google Maps when travellers searched for those stays. We treated each query worth winning as a star that wasn’t showing yet.

Survey of the dark · audit findings

  1. I

    Local

Wrong primary category, pin in a lay-by

The Business Profile sat under a generic campsite category and the map pin was 1.2 km away on the A82. Google had no strong reason to show it for cabin or glamping searches.

  2. II

    Local

Three phone numbers across 23 listings

The citation crawl found the business listed as both 'Corrie Bothy' and 'Corrie Bothy Pods', with two old mobile numbers and a former postcode. The name, address and phone details conflicted with each other.

  3. III

    Reviews

52 reviews, newest five months old

None of the reviews had an owner reply, and guests were never asked to leave one. The listings ranking above it had more recent reviews that mentioned 'hot tub', 'stars' and 'winter'.

  4. IV

    Technical

No structured data and an iframed booking engine

There was no schema anywhere on the site. Bookings went through a third-party iframe, so 71% of reservations came via online travel agents (OTAs) and direct share was 29%.

  5. V

    Content

The footer still said 'Open April–October'

The site had no pages about winter, dark skies or the aurora, even though the pods are open all year with wood-fired tubs and almost no light pollution.

  6. VI

    Technical

    4.8 s mobile LCP

A 3.1 MB hero photo and a render-blocking slider slowed the page on rural 4G, which is the connection most guests are using when they search on the A82.

The strategy

Four instruments to bring the stars out

The programme ran on our Local plan. Each tactic targeted one gap the audit found.

Google Business Profile

Instr. I

We switched the primary category to cabin/glamping accommodation, moved the pin to the gate, uploaded geotagged photos of every pod (including night shots), built a services list for hot tubs, dog-friendly pods and EV charging, and posted weekly about aurora forecasts and winter offers.

Review strategy

Instr. II

A thank-you email at checkout and a QR card in each pod's guestbook asked every guest for a review, with no incentives. The owners replied to every review within 48 hours, naming the pod and the season.

Local tourism citations

Instr. III

We fixed the name, address and phone details on all 23 existing listings, then added 31 relevant ones: regional tourism boards, Outdoor Capital directories, dark-sky and walking-route guides, and glamping directories with a booking link.

Accommodation schema

Instr. IV

We marked up the site as a LodgingBusiness and each pod as an Accommodation with occupancy, amenityFeature, petsAllowed and check-in times. We added FAQ markup to the new winter and dark-sky pages and moved the booking engine onto the site's own domain.
